My Midlife Crisis
with Neil Litt

THE "SAVING THE BOTTOM LINE" EDITION

When word spread that the Bottom Line was in trouble, a campaign took shape to "save" the Bottom Line.

And I was reminded of the dozens of nights back in the 1970s and 1980s when I stayed up late and taped broadcasts from The Bottom Line-- "saving" The Bottom Line in my own way. Were those tapes as good as I remembered?

This edition of "My Midlife Crisis" was posted to the web in December 2003, just as NYU announced its intention to evict The Bottom Line and convert the space into classrooms.

It begins with excerpts from a joyous concert that was originally broadcast on October 10, 1977.

Vin Scelsa introduces Steve Goodman, and we hear Steve perform several songs, including "You're the Girl I Love," "City of New Orleans," and "Spoon River."

On August 22, 1980, the David Bromberg band appeared at The Bottom Line in what was billed at the time as their "farewell" appearance.

David was going to study violin-making and completely transform his life.

"You Got to Suffer If You Want to Sing the Blues" and "I Don't Want No Reefer" are among the songs from that night that are part of the "Saving the Bottom Line" edition of "My Midlife Crisis."

Garland Jeffreys performed on the stage of The Bottom Line many, many times. (He even did a few numbers during David Bromberg's farewell show!)

This edition of "My Midlife Crisis" includes portions of Garland and his band's performance on November 17, 1979.

The "crisis" concludes with John Prine, from The Bottom Line, from July 1978.

Here, John Prine is shown more recently, with Meg Griffin, one of my favorite disc jockeys, as well as one of the greatest champions of The Bottom Line.
